Hi James,
This is quite a story and you must be very proud of the journey Rosie is
on. How many of us wish we could do even half of what she is
doing? She's amazing and it will be quite interesting to follow
her on her travels.
I heard her story on a radio station in St. Paul, MN so when I saw
someone pulling a cart along the highway I knew who it was immediately.
I pulled over to meet her and talk about the trip. She is really
up-beat and full of energy! We talked about the local area, the
terrain, the local grocery stores and so on... She said she might like
to go through Prescott, Wisconsin, more for the scenery and the peace
and quiet of a rural route. Since I live in Prescott I drove ahead
to buy her some groceries. I returned a while later and took the
attached picture.
I wish her well and good luck to you in support of her journey.
Jerry
Hi James, My wife Sharon and I met Rosie on our road trip to Alaska in
our Mini Cooper S last summer. We helped her fix her cart,
signed her book and took a few photos. Just thought I'd share a
few of them with you. We hope to see her again sometime between
Chicago and New York. Please feel free to let us know
if there is anything I can do for her. We live just outside of
Richmond, Virginia but I am originally from New York and we travel
there quite often since I still have family there.
Please keep up the good work, Jimmy & Sharon

Hope you are OK.
I write to tell you you've somehow got your lines
crossed. You have misplaced Stockholm/Wisconsin and placed it in
Minnesota somewhere west of Minneapolis/St.Paul. It aint there!
You posted an email from folks called Bruce and
Julie who said they met Rosie att Maiden Rock. My road map of the US
shows Maiden Rock as being on the east bank of the Mississipi and
Stockholm as about 6 miles further down stream on the same side. The
river is the boundary between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Bruce and Julie say Maiden Rock has a population of
only 121 but nevertheless it is marked in my Times Atlas of the World
and the index gives its position as: 44 deg 34'N: 92 deg
18'W. The next place of any size is La Crosse and she should have
passed there by now. In fact I guess she must have crossed the 90
deg W line by now.

John
13 of April 2007 Hi everyone, Rosie called today from a place called
Stockholm, she said it was another very friendly place. She is heading
back up to Park Rapids, for another marathon session with Dr. Jay
Jorgenson at his dentistry, who is very kindly fixing her teeth free of
charge. She has had several appointments and there is going to be more
to come. What she is doing is continuing on running and making progress
and travelling back for her appointments with Dr. Jorgenson.
Rosie said the weather has been quite cold lately, I asked about her
health, any aches or pains in her legs or anything, she said she was
fine, and spent most of the call encouraging me, which was a real boost.
The travelling back and forth is a little bit hard, but she is not
complaining as she is so grateful for getting her teeth fixed by Dr. Jay
Jorgenson, as they have been causing her so much pain.
Arrangements made for Silver Her Buggy tent device to be left
somewhere safe, and lifts have to be arranged. Rosie really wanted to me
to thank everyone for the kindness she has received from so many people,
who have really gone out of their way to help her. Apology again for
that annoying porn spam in the guest book, I'm waiting for a top
technical guy to help me get rid of it for good.
Hi, a good friend has pointed out that Rosies position is
incorrect, my apologies, when I next speak to her I shall get an
up-to-date position fix.

HI James,
we met Rosie today in our little town on the Mississippi River, Maiden
Rock, Wisconsin (pop. 121)
She stopped in the Smiling Pelican Bakery and got this little souvenir
wood carved owl.
she hung in the the cart/tent and said "now I can save on
touch lights since my owl can see in the dark".
It's been snowing here all day.
She is a bright and shinning wonderful woman and she left a trail of
beautiful light as she walked on.
Hope you enjoy the photos attached, owl in tent and rosie with a perfect
yoga dismount
she asked us to email it to you.

Hi James,
Here is a photo of Rosie and my boys from Rice, MN. They loved
her the moment they met her. Also, a snapshot of Rosie and our
dog, Murphy. You see he was taken by Rosie as well.

31st of March 2007. Hi everyone. I have had this great article and
photos sent to me by Beth Winkler of the Park
Rapids Enterprise Newspaper. I spoke to Rosie today. She has just
had over five hours of intensive treatment by Dr. Jay Jorgenson and
Marcia Giese. Dr Jorgenson really is a living saint. He is donating his
time and labour to the tune of over the $30,000 dollars. Rosie's
teeth were in a very bad way and she is going to need many more
treatments which he had agreed to. Dr Jorgenson is a tri athlete
himself, a Rosie said he has been treated so kindly by him and his
staff. He wanted me to thank also everyone at Park Rapids who has been
so kind and hospitable.
Also thanks to everyone posting comments in the guest book (apart
from those blasted Albanian pornographers Rosie is not too pleased about
this, and I said I would have another go at removing them). She feels a
little bad that she can't reply easily to all the kind messages of
support she gets. Rosie also wanted me to thank all those at the super 8
hotel in Park Rapids.
Dear Jim, The web is even more fantastic than
before. Please send a BIG, BIG group hug to all
the wonderful people who have made comments in the
Guest Book! They make all the difference to me.

Dear James,
My name is Beth Winkler I am a reporter for the Park Rapids
Enterprise. Rosie has been receiving dental care by one of our local
dentists. I have been following Rosie's journey for the last month. I
included the two stories I wrote as well as the photos which have
appeared in our newspaper (our website is: www.parkrapidsenterprise.com).
I put the two pictures for the first story before the story and the
picture for the second story before the second story. I will send this
to both of your e-mail accounts, any questions feel free to e-mail me

Rosie Swale-Pope (center), who is running around the world for cancer
awareness, has been returning to Park Rapids periodically for
appointments with Dr. Jay Jorgenson (left) and Marcia Giese (right).
(Beth Winkler/Enterprise)
By Beth Winkler
THE ENTERPRISE
"Thank you to the people of Park Rapids and all the area so
very, very much," said Rosie Swale-Pope, who recently became
acquainted with some of the people and places in the Park Rapids area.
Rosie first came to Park Rapids a month ago, while on her run around
the world for cancer awareness, to visit Park Rapids dentist, Dr. Jay
Jorgenson.
While in the area, Rosie said, she has received much help from many
people.
Rosie said when she came to Park Rapids, Jorgenson was going to
examine her teeth, which she said were in poor shape, to see if he could
be of assistance. After visiting with Jorgenson one time, he asked to do
a complete restoration on all of her teeth.
According to Jorgenson, he is volunteering his time to do the
complete restoration and lab fees will be discounted.
"We can really improve her situation," Jorgenson said.
Jorgenson said he has helped other patients in need of extensive work
in the same way. Patients with extreme cases, who are unable to afford
dental care, are referred to Jorgenson by organizations, such as Donated
Dental Services.
"It’s fun to help them out," explained Jorgenson.
Jorgenson said he had first heard about Rosie when a patient in Grand
Forks contacted him. The patient recommended Jorgenson to Rosie while
she was traveling through Grand Forks.
The entire process will take "two to four months to
complete." Jorgenson said, "up to 10 visits."
Rosie said this has been a highlight of her journey. For the next few
months, Rosie said she would continue her journey on foot and return to
Park Rapids, by some means of transportation, for dental appointments.
During her down time in Park Rapids, Rosie said she has been working
on a book and an article for "Runners World," the UK, European
Edition, at the Park Rapids Library.
Rosie has also done some speaking to various groups in Park Rapids.
"Some talks to repay people’s kindness on a small
measure," said Rosie.
Rosie spoke to Ardis Vazquez’s two eighth grade geography classes.
"The kids loved it," said Vazquez. "She had them
captivated."
Vazquez said, in a room with 58 eighth graders, "it was so quiet
you could hear a pin drop."
According to Vazquez, she welcomed the opportunity to have someone
from another country come and speak to the classes.
While speaking to a small group, at the Belle Café in Park Rapids,
Rosie told the audience about her life and about various adventures she’s
had on her trip around the world.
Rosie talked about her childhood and growing up under the care of her
arthritic grandmother.
She talked about sailing around the world as a young adult and the
different races she participated in, including the London Marathon and
the Sahara Marathon.
Rosie started her run around the world from her home in Tenby, Wales
on Oct. 2, 2003 when she was 57. On her adventure, Rosie said she
encountered wolves and bears in Siberia. She was swept away by rivers
twice and had severe frostbite on her foot in Alaska.
"When I was in Russia, I met two nice gentlemen who taught me
how to light a fire in the rain and it turned out they were convicted
murderers on the run," Rosie said.
While Rosie is determined to forge ahead little by little over the
next few months, she is enjoying getting to know the people in Park
Rapids.
"Its quite outstanding what people have done for me here,"
said Rosie. "Everybody’s been wonderful."
After Rosie’s dental work is complete, she will be continuing to
follow the Mississippi River, then head east to Chicago and go on to New
York.

THE ENTERPRISE
Rosie Swale-Pope has completed a journey that most people can only
dream about.
"Rosie the runner," has been traveling around the world on
foot for cancer awareness.
Starting from her home in Tenby, Wales, Oct. 2, 2003, she arrived in
the Park Rapids area Monday afternoon.
According to Rosie, she stopped in Park Rapids to visit dentist Jay
Jorgenson to have some work done on her teeth. This work will be an
ongoing process over the next few months. Rosie plans to head to the
Twin Cities next week, then return to Park Rapids for some time. She
will continue her journey on foot and return to Park Rapids for dental
visits (she is not sure by what means she will get back to Park Rapids,
but seems determined to find a way).
Rosie said while she was in Grand Forks she met the inventor of
"Get-a-Grip" cleats, Jon Larson, president of Sure Foot.
Ironically, they are cleats she wears on her shoes regularly in slippery
conditions. She said Jon recommended Dr. Jorgenson to her.
Rosie’s journey originally began when she participated in a road
race to raise money for books at a school in an Albanian village. This
experience led her to participate in the London Marathon and then the
Sahara Marathon. A 26-mile run, Sahara Marathon participants are
required to travel with all their camping equipment and food.
"There’s a freedom with the feet; you just need a pair of
shoes. If you are in any city, neighborhood or town, you just put on
your shoes and in a short time you can explore it," she said.
Rosie has run across Cuba, Kosovo and Romania to bring awareness to
the various charities she supports.
Rosie said she is completing this journey to bring awareness to other
charities as well, which includes, the Siberian Railway Cancer Hospital
at Omsk in Siberia and the Kitezh Community for Orphan Children
Orphanage in Russia.
"I believe in local charities very much," she added.
"The death of my husband from cancer taught me how precious life
is," she said. "I wanted to do something special in his honor
and in honor of all the people with cancer."
Rosie said she trained everywhere she went.
"When I got to a place, like London for a visit I ran
everywhere," she said.
To begin her journey, Rosie left her home in Wales, took a boat from
England to Holland and traveled all the way across Russia. She flew
across the Bering Sea and continued her journey from Wales, Alaska down
to Nome. She traveled along the Iditarod Trail to the Yukon River and
into North Dakota.
"The rule of this journey is I cross no oceans only seas and I
have to do it all on foot," she said.
After leaving Minnesota, Rosie will head to Newfoundland across
Greenland, Iceland and down through Scotland back to her home in Wales.
Along her journey she has compiled 46 scrapbooks and walked through
36 pairs of shoes.
Rosie said the winter storm she traveled through this past weekend
was not as difficult as other experiences she has had.
"I am used to the cold," she added.
Rosie said she broke a personal record Sunday, traveling 28 miles in
one day through the storm.
"In Siberia, it was minus 50 and 40 degrees constantly and not a
very good road," she said. "In Alaska, it was even colder -
minus 62 degrees Celsius."
Rosie said during the storm people stopped along the road to offer
her help. A state trooper had to help her pull her 300-pound cart out of
the deep snow early Monday morning.
"I made it through the storm," she said. "I think it
is because this journey is meant to succeed."
Rosie sleeps outside in her cart 95 percent of the time.
"I sleep very well in the cart," she said.
She uses a sleeping bag and caribou hides to keep warm at night.
Rosie said she has had many adventures. "The feet have
eyes," she said.
She has met many interesting people, too.
"I am very much inspired by the people I meet. They are all
beautiful and I want to thank them," she said. "I think of
everybody all the time."
Rosie said she is very grateful for all the help she has received
from people during her travels.
"The journey does not belong to me. It belongs to everyone that
helped me," she said.
When Rosie arrived in Park Rapids she stayed one night at the home of
Duane Gebhard, who helped her settle into the Park Rapids area.
"I want to thank Pastor Duane. I am very happy I came this
route," Rosie said. "People are wonderful here, so kind and so
interesting. I believe in true human magic - I really do - Minnesota
magic."
Rosie is a writer and a lecturer. Currently, she is writing a book
and an article for "Runners World," the UK, European Edition.
"I give talks of all types, travel talks and talks to businesses
about life being the biggest adventure, which is true," she said.
Rosie said she is looking forward to spending time in Park Rapids.
"I love Park Rapids already," said Rosie.
Rosie has a Web site that has updates of her journey. For more
information about her travels, the Web site is www.rosiearoundtheworld.co.uk.

Happy St Patrick's Day everyone. 4.45am. The
hooting of an owl has been joined by early
morning crowing of cockerel. I am camped outside a
farm as was invited by kind family. I have made
good friends with their charming Rottweiler called
Mikie - a favorite name for me since it reminds
me of 5 year old Mikie back at home! Going to
get. Running. I am trying to make progress
in-between appts with my brilliant Dentist. It is
warmer. A velvet night, with billions of stars as
bright as they often are at sea. St Cloud is about
30 miles - soon I'LL running alongside the.
Mississippi - always a dream of mine.

15 of March 2007, I was wondering if there are any computer experts
that could advise me on the problem and having with outlook express.
Some months ago I got hit by a virus, my computer was not infected as it
was spotted straight away by my antivirus software. However after
removing it I have not been able to get my outlook express to work. This
is why the e-mail notification have stopped. I have tried re installing
outlook. Removing it completely from my computer and then installing it
again and I keep getting these two error messages whenever I tried to
send all received any messages.

15 of March 2007 Hi, below the is a message from Rosie herself,
tapped out at 3 AM on a frosty morning. I had just finished talking to
her her.
Mar 12, 2007 7:15 AM
Hi James,
I managed about 18 miles yesterday and am close
to a village called Motley. Another few miles
closer to the finish line in Wales - every mile
counts!. It's great to have. The cart back. Well
wishers ferried the cart, whose latest nick name
is. HOT ROD CHARLIE out to me from its resting
place back in Park Rapids. I'd been trying to run w
backpack, so as to be more easily able to get
transport back to Park Rapids for the dental appts,
and to keep Charlie as my base in Park Rapids,
but trying to backpack with my equipment, that is
organized for use with the cart and therefore
heavy - was NOT a success.
Pulling 300lbs is heaven, compared to
carrying 60lbs on one's back.
Instead of living in the cart in Park Rapids
during the dentistry, the. Park Rapids Super 8 Inn
for offering me a generous berth. And bedi
I am overwhelmed and very touched by the way
the whole town has has got behind me and have
hugely helped in every way.
The plan now is to leave Hot Rod Charlie in
the care of the Fire Department or kindly Church
in Motley. That achieved, I'm going to be taken
back to Park Rapids for, which is tomorrow.
Depending on how the dental work goes, I shall
continue to-ing and fro-ing, endeavoring to keep
making some forward progress on the world run,
between appointments. This is only possible thanks to my
allies around here who are helping in an
extraordinary way with all the complicated logistics and
back up.
Tomorrow at 8am before the the dental
appointment,, I am scheduled to give a talk at Middle
School, Park Rapids, which will be fun.
The next e hours will be in the dentist's
chair, but I looking forward to this too.
Dr Jay Jorgenson and his team make me feel
that the dental sessions ahead are not an ordeal,
but rather are a difficult but exciting
adventure, a challenge that will be won.. I already feel
so much better after the first 2 hour appt with
Dr Jay i last Thursday.
Thank you again with all my heart to him and
his marvelous team, to all my allies here in the
USA and to all my very fabulous dear friends,
family and supporters everywhere.

10th of March 2007 Hi, was sent this nice picture of Rosie and short
message from Rebecca Komppa. Many thanks. I'm having a little trouble
with the previous set of photos, getting them to show the larger photos.
But am working on it, regards James
Dear Mr. Swale,
Your mother was in Sebeka, Minnesota, on Sunday, March 4th.
She inspired us all with her gentle, humble spirit.

9th of March 2007. Hi everyone, my apologies, I am a little behind
with the news updates. I spoke to Rosie today, she is so grateful to Dr.
Jay Jorgenson for helping her out with her teeth, they are in a very bad
way, requiring a lot of work and ingenuity to get an fixed. Rosie's
teeth have been a great concern to her, as she is in danger of losing
most, if not all of them and they have been causing her great pain for a
very long time.
The kind of dental work that Rosie needs is hugely expensive, I don't
know the precise details but Dr. Jay Jorgenson is taking on a very large
proportion of this work for free as a gift to Rosie. This is amazingly
generous and hugely appreciated by Rosie and myself.
Rosie also wanted me to warmly thank everyone at Park Rapids has been
so kind to her. Rosie dental work is going to require many trips back to
Park Rapids. She is going to continue running travelling light without
"silver" her buggy, which will be resting in Park Rapids, and
when she travelled back returning to the point she left off. Several
people have been kind enough to offer ride back to Park Rapids when she
needs it. She wants to continue to maintain her fitness and momentum.
and
I received these two message from Rosie and Marla DeFoe on the First
of March. Also I have some great pictures sent in by Anna Waaraniemi
when Rosie was in Menahga a short while ago.

Also, I have received outstanding help and kindness from Pastor Duane and Jennifer Gebhard
and family
Jeremy and Mary Davies and family Park Rapids Library - where I am writing my
book....
.... The marvelous Minnesota Police Department, the brave State Snow
Plough drivers, who swept the roads extra for silver so I could get here,
Jim and Jane Murphy, Rodger and Trina Mason, PJ and
Christine and many, many, many,MANYothers... The weather is very poor today. 20inches of snow
expected during the next few hours. So I have to go - as the library has to close early because of the snow.
I will keep sending news. Most of all thank you so vvv much to everyone who has helped me and
supported me everywhere...

I
just got a call from Rosie and she is in Park Rapids. We’ve had a heck
of a snowstorm but Rosie said thanks to her Get-A-Grips and her bright
orange clothing, she was able to go even when cars couldn’t travel.
She said that she’s made friends with quite a few snow plow drivers.
We are supposed to get another blast of wind and snow today and
tomorrow, but looking forward to nice weather after that. Rosie told me
that she went a record 28 miles yesterday to get to the dentist in Park
Rapids on time. She asked me to have you put a note on her website that
Dr. Jay Jorgenson is doing fantastic work on her teeth. She said that he
is the most beautiful, kind dentist she has ever met. Both Dr. Jay and
Rosie are certain that he will be able to save her teeth.
Overall,
even though the weather is bad and she’s gotten a little windblown,
she is in fantastic spirits. Just thought I would pass the word along.
Thanks!

1st of March 2007.Thank you Christine, for your e-mail and great
photos of Rosie I have just spoken to Rosie who is now in Park
Rapids. She asked me to thank you for your kindness. The dentist
at Park Rapids has been absolutely wonderful. So keen was Rosie to get
there that she said a personal best in the conditions are running 28
miles through the snow. She is so happy with the dentist. I am waiting
for her to send me an e-mail so I can get people's names right. She
wanted to thank the snow plough crews and highway patrol who have been
making extra efforts to clear the snow to help Rosie along.
Dear James, we met your mum today and took her a hot meal and got to
visit with her. She said she wanted us to send you pictures for the web
page. We also took a video greeting which I will send in another email
to you. She wanted you and your sister to know that you are her rock and
her lifeline. She really appreciates all the work you have been doing on
the web site and thanks you for it. Today she is just outside of Bagley,
Minnesota USA.She seems in great spirits and is doing well. In a bit of
a rush to get to Park Rapids to see a dentist. It has been snowing all
day and it a bit windy and it was hard to say goodbye and watch her run
off into the miserable conditions, even though she thought they were
great. She is a wonderful woman you should be very proud of her.
Hope you like the update and the photos.
Christine.
Many thanks for the photos Christine. James

These photos were sent in by Zona who met up with Rosie in Fisher MN
on the 18th of Feb. Thank you for your lovely e-mail James.

22nd of February 2007 Hi everyone, I received this wonderful e-mail
and photos from Joan Nelson. Rosie has really been overwhelmed by the
kindness she has been receiving from people as she continued her
journey. I am very grateful as she is my mum and it is nice to know that
despite the harsh weather conditions, she is as determined and happy as
she had ever been. And I put this down to all the hospitable and
friendly people she has met ever since arriving in Alaska and through
Canada and down to North Dakota. I am looking forward to my next chat
with Rosie on the phone for the latest news. Regards James

James, Eve and families,
I am from Devils Lake, North Dakota. While I passed your mom
many times along Highway 2 between Minot and Grand Forks I never was
able to stop and visit with her. And I missed her when she stopped in
Devils Lake. But the more I read about her I just knew I had to meet
this lady! So this past Monday I went to Grand Forks and continued on
toward Crookston in search of Rosie. I found her about 7 miles east of
Crookston taking a rest in her 'home away from home' that I believe she
calls Charlie. She is very easy to spot on the road with Charlie's
bright color and her blaze orange suit.
She was all smiles when I went over to her cart. I now know why
her name is Rosie. It is because she always has a rosie smile and great
attitude. I must say her cart is very efficient as it is just big
enough for her to sleep in and it really keeps the wind out. I'm sure
those reindeer hides have been a god send for her for keeping warm. I
brought her some dried venison and pepper sticks which she was tickled
to get. We visited a short while and then she said she must be getting
back on the road with her marathon walk.
I asked her if there was any thing she wanted me to relay to you
and it was just that she can't tell you enough how very very very much
she loves you all and without your support she would not be able to do
what she is doing. And she can't say enough good things about SureFoot
for the insulators for her shoes. They have made a world of difference
for her walking. I see you have added their logo to the Web page and I
am sure that will make her happy.
Rosie is in great health and attitude but she is looking forward
to getting to Park Rapids to the dentist.
I am sending you a few pictures I took while I visited with her.
The last one is her heading back down the highway. You have a very
adventurous mother but what an inspiration she to everyone who's path
she crosses. I am glad I made the 130 mile trip to catch up to her and I
look forward to watching her trip continue and will pray for her to have
a safe journey till she arrives back in Wales. Your web sight is great,
keep up the good work.
Sincerely, Joan Nelson

A big thank you to Jon Larson, the president of Sure Foot in Grand Forks, ND.
17th of February 2007.
Hi everyone, spoke to Rosie today, the weather conditions over recent
weeks have been incredibly tough. In the past weeks the temperature has
been around -30 to -40 with the wind chill on top that it has been
extremely cold.
She is just ablaze with that amazing spirit of hers that comes when
she is on the absolute edge of her endurance. I can hear it in her voice
and I recognize it from her previous very grueling stages of her run,
across Siberia and then Alaska in the winter. I can't believe it is now
the third incredibly cold winter she is enduring as she runs around the
world. It would not have been possible but for the kindness and
hospitality she had received, which on many occasions have saved her
life.
The past few months she had received great warmth and kindness from
so many people. Rosie told me as she is running along that he thinks
about all those who have helped her but worries that he is not able to
thank them all as she would like, as it is so hard to stay in contact
while out on the road.
When Rosie called me it was from a house of some people in Fisher,
who had invited Rosie in, I did not catch their names as the phone kept
on cutting out and I had to end the call. Rosie wanted me to thank,
SureFoot Corporation. Rosie met the designer of Sure Foot ice cleats
which Rosie has been using to run on the ice and snow. And he has
designed some very effective insulation to protect Rosie toe, that was
badly Frost bitten last year in Alaska and has since been more
vulnerable to the cold.
11th of Feb, Hi everyone, apologies for the lack of news about Rosie. Rosie is struggling through a very cold conditions at the moment. I am in the process of updating web site. I am in discussion to get the web site madeover professionally and easier to
update, James.
