ahem...Hans de Waard..., Rosie didn't skip Greenland at all. She just didn't cross the Ice Cap. In most places in Greenland the ONLY way to travel this time of year is by air and Rosie did that. We have no roads, not even paths between the cities, towns and settlements. It is not possible to 'walk' Greenland. The distances are enourmous. Greenland is a little more than three times the size of Texas. Or if you compare with Europe: place the northern most tip of Greenland next to Copenhagen, Denmark and the southern tip of the country stretches waaay into the Sahara desert. Rosie was first in Narsarsuaq which is in the southern most part of the country, then she traveled north to Nuuk situated at 64 degrees 11 minutes north - 51 egrees 44 minutes east. We are about 250 kilometers south of the arctic circle. From Nuuk Rosie flew to Kulusuk on the east coast of Greenland. Kulusuk has pretty much the same latitude as Nuuk. We have talked about crossing the Ice Cap. Rosie knows what is needed. I have no doubt in my mind that when she comes back to cross it (600 kilometers between Nuuk and Tasiilaq), she will come fully prepared, and cross it hands down with flying colors. :-)

Dear brave Rosie, In the first place many congratulations that you have crossed two HUGE continents! You probably don't see it as an achievement but I really find it is one. They have brought you many adventures you bring to the many of us who are following you on internet. I have been following you since october 2003 when you visited Leeuwarden -Friesland, the Netherlands- where I live nearby. I must have logged in about a 1000 times since than. It's SO THRILLING to also be embarked on your odyssee. Through Google Earth I could follow you through Siberia, Alaska, Canada and the States. Flying over the long lonesome roads you had passed and following the bends of the mighty Yukon you walked on with its overflows and sometime treacherous tin ice. Looking also ahead to see what challenges you were up to meet and see which decicions you made to keep up with them. As to your Greenland plans I got my eyebrows lifted; no, I got really worried for your savety. You saw it as your "Mount Everest experience" But the Everest you do not challenge solo. It really can be done to cross the ice cap (several parties do each year) but you must be specially prepared for this and preferably do it with competent company. From pictures of cap crossers it looks like an ocean with waves of ice and snow. I am sure you would love to "sail" it another time. So I was very releived to find out that you skipped Greenland for the moment and continue on Iceland. A very wise decision. It might also bring you closer to your scheduled arrival in Tenby. May your legs carry you there in savety. And as the Norwegians say: Ut pa tur, aldri sur. Out on a hike, you are never sour. So I'll think of you when I am out on a skitour in Norway in March myself. Let the good spirits of nature always be with you!
